Practical Information

Getting Around

A car is highly recommended for this itinerary to easily access attractions spread across Virginia Beach, particularly Back Bay Wildlife Refuge and First Landing State Park. Most oceanfront hotels offer parking (some charge fees). The VB Wave transit system provides bus service along the oceanfront and to some attractions, but routes are limited. Bike rentals are excellent for exploring the boardwalk area and nearby neighborhoods. Ride-sharing services are readily available in tourist areas. If flying in, Norfolk International Airport is 20 minutes away; plan for rental car pickup there.

Book Ahead

Book oceanfront accommodations 2-3 months ahead for summer visits. Reserve zipline adventures at least 1-2 weeks in advance. Purchase Virginia Aquarium tickets online before your visit during peak season to avoid lines.

Packing Essentials

Sunscreen and sun hat, swimsuit and beach towel, comfortable walking shoes and sandals, light layers for air-conditioned attractions, binoculars for wildlife viewing, reusable water bottle, insect repellent, camera with zoom lens for wildlife photography, light rain jacket

Total Budget

$500-690 for three days (per person, excluding accommodation)

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Save money by packing picnic lunches from grocery stores, skipping the zipline adventure in favor of free hiking at First Landing State Park, and choosing accommodations a few blocks inland from the oceanfront. Visit free attractions like Mount Trashmore Park and explore the boardwalk extensively. Many beaches and natural areas have no entrance fees. Consider visiting during shoulder season (May or September) for lower accommodation rates while still enjoying good weather.

Luxury Upgrade

Upgrade to a beachfront resort with spa services and fine dining. Book a private dolphin-watching boat tour through the aquarium's adventure programs. Arrange a guided kayak eco-tour through Back Bay's waterways with a naturalist. Enjoy upscale seafood dining at oceanfront restaurants with sommelier-selected wine pairings. Consider a helicopter tour of the coastline for spectacular aerial views. Add a day trip to Colonial Williamsburg or a sunset sailing charter on the Chesapeake Bay.

Family-Friendly

Add Mount Trashmore Park for playground fun and kite flying. Spend more time at the Virginia Aquarium's interactive exhibits and outdoor adventure park. Choose the gentler hiking trails at First Landing State Park and skip ziplining for younger children, or visit Grommet Island Park's playground instead. Build in extra beach time for sandcastle building. Many restaurants along the oceanfront are very family-friendly with kids' menus. Consider renting beach equipment like umbrellas and boogie boards for extended beach play.
